Short answer: The Surgical Protocol Kit is a convenience product: one 25 g whey protein packet a day with 3 g of leucine and added vitamins, plus a carbohydrate drink for the night before surgery. It is worth it if you will struggle to hit your protein target around surgery and want one routine you can start 1 week before. It is not worth it if you already eat enough protein, want the lowest cost, or fall into one of the groups listed below.

Disclosure: this is Thrive Protocol reviewing its own product, so read it with that in mind. We have tried to be as fair to the alternatives as we are to our kit. Competitor details come from each maker's own website or a named retailer, checked on the date shown.

Who makes Thrive Protocol?

Thrive Protocol products are distributed by Complete Surgical Nutrition of Central Point, Oregon, as printed on every packet label. If you searched for "Complete Surgical Nutrition reviews" after seeing that name on a Thrive box, this is the product line you have. Thrive describes its products as developed by physicians.

One naming note: ENROUTE, a separate company, sells a product called the "ENROUTE Complete Surgical Nutrition Program". Several forum threads that use that phrase are about ENROUTE, not Thrive. "Thrive" diet patches and shakes sold by other companies are also unrelated to Thrive Protocol.

What's inside the Surgical Protocol Kit

Each kit contains a supply of OptiFuel (28 packets per month), 2 packets of OptiCharge and a shaker bottle. Here is what the labels show, checked on 18 October 2026.

What it costs per day

Using the live prices and 28 OptiFuel packets per month:

  • 4-week kit: $299.99 / 28 = about $10.71 a day
  • 3-month kit: $499.99 / 84 = about $5.95 a day
  • 6-month kit: $669.99 / 168 = about $3.99 a day
  • Recovery and Strength Mix (30-day supply): $49.99 / 30 = about $1.67 a day

Thrive Protocol kits are HSA/FSA eligible, so you can use pre-tax health dollars.

How the formula lines up with the research

No trial has tested the Surgical Protocol Kit itself. Here is how its parts compare with what has been studied, including where the evidence is thin.

  • Protein. ESPEN estimates protein needs around surgery at about 1.5 g per kg of ideal body weight a day (1). For a 70 kg ideal weight that is 105 g, so one 25 g packet covers about a quarter. A US consensus statement from enhanced recovery experts stresses that protein delivery matters more than total calories, and supports oral nutrition supplements, including after discharge (2).
  • Leucine and amino acids. In 28 older adults having knee replacement, 20 g of essential amino acids twice a day, from 1 week before to 2 weeks after surgery, was linked with much less thigh muscle loss (3). A 60-patient trial using 9 g a day over the same window also found less thigh muscle loss and a faster return to daily activities (4). These were amino acid formulas, not whey packets, at different doses than OptiFuel.
  • Carb loading. US anesthesia guidelines support carbohydrate clear liquids up to 2 hours before elective procedures in healthy adults (5). For hip and knee replacement, the ERAS Society says it may improve well-being but is not an essential routine step (6). Our carb loading drink guide covers choosing and timing.
  • Fish oil and turmeric. OptiFuel contains small amounts. In a 1,516-patient heart surgery trial, fish oil before surgery did not increase major bleeding compared with placebo (7). Thrive's guidance is that there is no need to stop OptiFuel before surgery, but your own surgeon's instructions always come first.
  • Immunonutrition (arginine, omega-3 and nucleotide formulas) is a different category. ESPEN recommends these formulas around surgery for malnourished patients having major cancer surgery, and says there is no clear evidence they beat standard supplements when used only before surgery (8). In major abdominal surgery, their benefits disappeared when only low-bias trials were counted (9). OptiFuel is not an immunonutrition formula.

How it compares

Prices and nutrition facts below come from each maker's website or a named retailer, checked on 18 October 2026. "Course" uses each maker's own directions.

Option Protein per serving Notable extras Maker's directions Price seen (18 Oct 2026) Approximate course cost
Thrive Surgical Protocol Kit 25 g whey plus collagen Leucine 3 g, vitamin C 500 mg, vitamin D 800 IU, calcium 430 mg; 2 carb drink packets (46 g each) 1 packet a day from about 1 week before surgery through recovery; 2 OptiCharge the night before $299.99 for 4 weeks (Thrive) $299.99 for 4 weeks, about $10.71 a day

Abbott Ensure Surgery Immunonutrition Shake 18 g per 8 fl oz, including 4.2 g arginine EPA+DHA 1.1 g, 330 kcal Daily for at least 5 days before and after surgery, or as directed; for use under medical supervision $96.00 for 24 at the Abbott Store Abbott's 5-day bundle (20 shakes plus 3 Pre-Surgery drinks) is $89.00
ENROUTE Complete Surgical Nutrition Program 26 g per BUILD serving (dairy or plant) Creatine and leucine listed (amounts not verified); 2 PREPARE carb servings (50 g each) BUILD twice a day for 14 days before and 14 days after surgery; PREPARE the evening before $349.00 for 4 weeks (ENROUTE) $349.00 for 4 weeks, about $12.46 a day
Whey protein plus a multivitamin 24 g per scoop (Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard) Depends on the multivitamin; no pre-op drink Your own plan Whey 5 lb $114.99 (74 scoops) and Centrum Adults 200 tablets $12.36, both at Walmart $1.55 + $0.06 = about $1.62 a day

How to read this. The immunonutrition drinks are a different tool: they are medical foods built around arginine and fish oil for a short window around surgery, and guidelines favor them for malnourished patients having major cancer surgery (8). ENROUTE is the closest like-for-like kit, with more protein servings per day and creatine in its daily product; Thrive puts creatine in a separate mix. Whey plus a multivitamin is by far the cheapest, if you will actually take it every day and source a pre-op drink separately. The Surgical Protocol Kit sits between them: one daily packet with vitamin C, vitamin D and calcium built in, plus the evening carb drink.

What customers say

On 18 October 2026, the Surgical Protocol Kit product page showed an average of 4.59 out of 5 from 111 reviews. These reviews are collected on Thrive's own site, so they are not an independent rating. We did not find a Trustpilot profile for the brand. Who the kit is for

  • You have a planned orthopaedic or other elective surgery at least a week away.
  • Your appetite drops when you are anxious or in pain, and you know you will undershoot protein.
  • You want one simple routine instead of buying protein, vitamins and a pre-op drink separately.
  • Your anesthesia team is happy for you to use a carbohydrate drink the night before.

Who the kit is NOT for

  • People already eating enough protein from food. A packet a day adds little if you already hit your target.
  • Budget-first buyers. A plain whey protein and a basic multivitamin cost about $1.62 a day in our check, against $3.99 to $10.71 a day for the kit. You lose the pre-op drink and the all-in-one routine.
  • Malnourished patients facing major cancer surgery. Guidelines point to immunonutrition formulas for this group (8). Ask your surgical team.
  • People with a milk allergy. OptiFuel is whey-based and contains milk. Thrive suggests the Recovery and Strength Mix alone for people who do not tolerate whey.
  • People who are insulin dependent, until their physician approves OptiCharge. For most people with diabetes the pre-op drink is fine; if you skip it, the Recovery Protocol Kit is the same OptiFuel without OptiCharge.
  • People told to limit protein, for example with advanced kidney disease, until their doctor says otherwise.
  • Anyone whose surgery is already done. Buy the Recovery Protocol Kit, which is the same OptiFuel without OptiCharge and costs slightly less.

Before you buy: shipping and returns

Thrive's FAQ says orders placed before 12:30 pm Pacific on business days generally ship the same day, delivery usually takes 5 to 10 business days, and expedited shipping is recommended if surgery is less than 2 weeks away. Returns carry a $25 restocking fee and you pay return shipping.

How to use it

  1. Start about 1 week before surgery with one OptiFuel packet a day, mixed with 12 to 16 oz of water, milk or non-dairy milk, between meals.
  2. The night before surgery, if approved, mix each OptiCharge packet with 12 to 16 oz of water (never milk) and drink both at bedtime.
  3. Restart OptiFuel when you are eating again after surgery and continue through recovery.
  4. Add the Recovery and Strength Mix daily. Thrive suggests OptiFuel between breakfast and lunch and the Mix between lunch and dinner.

Which product fits where you are

  • Surgery still ahead: Surgical Protocol Kit. 4-week $299.99, 3-month $499.99, 6-month $669.99.
  • Surgery already done: Recovery Protocol Kit. 4-week $289, 3-month $499, 6-month $669.
  • Add to either kit: Recovery and Strength Mix, $49.99. Dr. Denard recommends everyone on a kit also takes it daily. It is the only Thrive product with creatine (5 g) and arginine (2 g).

Thrive Protocol kits are HSA/FSA eligible, so you can use pre-tax health dollars.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Surgical Protocol Kit worth it?

It is worth it if convenience is the problem: you want 25 g of protein and key vitamins daily without planning, plus a pre-op carb drink. If you already hit your protein target from food, or cost matters most, a simpler setup will do.

What is the difference between the Surgical and Recovery Protocol Kits?

Both contain daily OptiFuel and a shaker. The Surgical Protocol Kit adds 2 OptiCharge packets for the night before surgery. Buy the Surgical kit if surgery is ahead and the Recovery kit if it is behind you.

Is Complete Surgical Nutrition the same as Thrive Protocol?

Complete Surgical Nutrition is the company named as distributor on Thrive Protocol packet labels. Be aware that ENROUTE, a different company, calls its product the ENROUTE Complete Surgical Nutrition Program, so some reviews using that phrase are about ENROUTE.

Do I need to stop the kit before surgery?

Thrive's guidance is that there is no need to stop OptiFuel before surgery. Your surgeon's instructions always come first, so show them the label.

When should I start the Surgical Protocol Kit?

About 1 week before surgery. If your date is closer, start as soon as you can and choose faster shipping.
